This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the movie being covered here wouldn’t exist.
They Cloned Tyrone is, to put it accurately, a “cosmic gumbo” of a movie. Starring John Boyega, Teyonah Parris, and Jamie Foxx, the story follows a group of individuals who find themselves at the center of a government conspiracy. This film is a comedy, blaxploitation, sci-fi, and mystery all in one.
That can be daunting, but all of its tones are blended incredibly well and those three are absolutely great.
Starting with Boyega, he has done well in spacing himself away from the Star Wars sequels. He plays a wide multitude of characters, each with unique mannerisms and emotions, and he just crushes it. It is a wild concept of a movie that really banks on you learning what is happening with the lead and he is a good surrogate.
Teyonah Paris was just so much fun to watch. Boyega was the group’s brawn, and she was the brains. She is more than a capable character and plays so well off her co-stars. Last but certainly not least, Jamie Foxx. First off, I’m glad he’s healthy from whatever medical issues he was facing. He is so hilarious here. He plays a pimp, and he just took off within the role.
The story is pretty interesting as well. I find government conspiracy movies to be hit or miss and this one is pretty solid. It dives into race heavily and given the history of black Americans and government tests, it adds a lot of layers. The cloning element is done well where it is not too confusing but allows for the actors to unravel the conspiracy as I did.
Final Thoughts
They Cloned Tyrone is just a really fun watch on Netflix. The main cast has good chemistry and it just elevates the film. The story is really easy to follow along with and it is interesting enough to warrant rewatches.
