Whenever a new Christmas movie comes to theaters, I’m always a little weary. Especially when the past several years have not produced any decent Christmas movies. I went into Spirited with semi-high hopes. Hey, it has Will Farrell and Ryan Reynolds. How bad could it be? I haven’t really seen any promotion for this movie beside knowing it is a musical.
Then while I was watching it, I noticed that it’s another spin-off of A Christmas Carol. I was sort of bummed out and annoyed because there have been countless adaptations of the Charles Dickens book. However, to my surprise, I actually liked it.
I enjoyed the music a little more than I thought I would. It was catchy and sometimes humorous. This was the first film I saw that both Will Farrell and Ryan Reynolds sang in a musical. It was quite nice. It has been a while since I’ve actually seen a musical. They were just never for me when I was younger. However, I do indeed want to get back into them after seeing this movie. If I enjoyed this movie I just can’t wait until I see films such as The Greatest Showman or Les Miserable.
The plot of the movie was okay. There are a few things that I wish they changed or didn’t do. The runtime seemed a bit long but nothing unbearable to watch. It was heartwarming but certain things seemed forced. I was surprised by the PG-13 rating. Especially for a Christmas movie.
There were definitely some themes that were not for kids, but I feel like they could easily take them out in order to make it a family PG movie. But I wasn’t mad or upset about that. I can just see a handful of families upset about that.
Final Thoughts
Would I watch Spirited again this Christmas season? Probably not. But I would probably watch it once every year during the Christmas season. It was nothing special, but it was a different type of adaptation which was interesting.
