On November 8th, 2023, after 118 days of striking, negotiations and uncertainty, SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP have finally agreed to a tentative deal to end the actor’s strike mere days after the actors guild rejected what was labeled as the “Last, Best and Final” offer from the AMPTP.
This comes just over 1 month since the WGA struck a deal with the AMPTP to end their strike, with many similar issues being negotiated between the two guilds.
It was an incredibly hard-fought battle on the side of SAG-AFTRA, as they had to navigate a bevy of issues presented to them from the AMPTP in order to reach an agreement. As for the AMPTP, they have received plenty of negative public sentiment as they refused to negotiate on several key issues until the deal was finally struck.
While the official details of the agreement have not been disclosed, SAG-AFTRA gave some basic details in an official statement on X. In the thread, they stated that the new, tentative contract is valued at over 1 billion dollars and includes protections on a multitude of key issues.
These protections included “unprecedented provisions for consent compensation that will protect members from the threat of AI.”, increases in minimum compensation for performers, a first-time introduction of a “streaming participation bonus” and substantial increases in pension and health caps.
In addition, pay increases for background actors and contract provisions that protect diverse communities are said to be included in this agreement.
These are incredible wins for SAG-AFTRA, who have been working hard to ensure their guild can keep up with inflation, new advancements in technology, and new platforms for the content they help create.
SAG-AFTRA announced that the strike officially ended at 12:01am on Thursday morning, with more details of the agreement following a meeting on Friday.
