Ranking The 6 New Movies I Watched In February 2025

Many consider the early months of a new year to be the worst months for new movie releases, and February is certainly no exception. Despite this being a slower and more underwhelming month for film, there were still a few releases that stood out to me. Here is my February ranking of the new movies I watched.

6. Love Hurts

A romantic action comedy that arrived just in time for Valentine’s Day and starred the lovable Ke Huy Quan sounds like it could have been enjoyable, but unfortunately, it was the farthest thing from enjoyable. The only thing I appreciated about this February release was its short runtime of less than 90 minutes. Overall, it’s just very generic and lame, despite a few slightly fun moments of action. I’ll always be rooting for Ke Huy Quan, but as an Academy Award-winning actor, he’s better than this.

5. You’re Cordially Invited

Yet another straight-to-streaming movie that I’m destined to forget about. It’s only a matter of time. As usual, Will Ferrell did get a few laughs out of me, but otherwise, this movie was way too long for what it is and it most definitely overstayed its welcome. I found it uncomfortable to watch most of the time, and there’s a romantic subplot towards the end that comes so far out of left field. It felt unnecessary and forced.

4. Captain America: Brave New World

What was supposed to be the fourth Captain America movie turned out to be more of a light sequel to “The Incredible Hulk” that just so happened to feature Captain America, it’s as weird as it sounds. I do believe the MCU has seen a lot worse than this, but it’s still a very middle-of-the-road, mediocre post-Endgame entry, and you can feel all of the reshoots this movie went through. A lot of it did not work for me, which is a shame, because Anthony Mackie deserved better for his first cinematic outing as Captain America. This movie still found a place in my February movies ranking, though not as high as it could have.

3. Dog Man

As silly and unserious as this movie can be, I had fun with Dog Man. I wanted to see a wacky movie about a crime-fighting dog-human hybrid and that’s exactly what I got. It is aimed primarily at families with young kids and the story is on the simple side, but there’s still much to enjoy here for older audience members, especially if you love dogs and dog humor. Numerous bits had me cracking up. I also dug the vibrant art style as well as the energetic animation. In terms of February movies, this one stands out.

2. The Monkey

Look, if you didn’t like this horror comedy, I get it. I completely understand that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Personally, though, it was my cup of tea with ridiculous kills, an absurd atmosphere, eccentric writing, and irreverent direction from Osgood Perkins. Sure, I didn’t find it all that scary, but as a dark comedy about confronting death as well as family trauma, I thought it was a morbid good time. Clearly, it earned a high spot in my February ranking of movies.

1. I’m Still Here

Based on a true story, this is a harrowing depiction of authoritarianism shown through the poignant lens of a Brazilian family. While it is technically a 2024 movie, it didn’t come to theaters near me until recently, which I’m glad it did, because this political biographical drama completely floored me. It’s very much a slow burn that wants you to let every single haunting detail sink in as you’re confronted with genuine horrors/tragedies of fascism. Fernanda Torres delivers an understatedly powerful lead performance brimming with resiliency and strength. This movie truly deserved all its Oscar nominations as well as its Best International Feature Film Oscar win. Without a doubt, it topped my February movies ranking.

And that’s it! All the movies I watched in February 2025 ranked. There were some good, even great, films and some that really weren’t. But inevitably there will be something for everyone!

For as far back as I can remember, I have loved movies and the escapism they provide. From when I was a child until I was a teenager, my family moved around a few times, and while that wasn't always easy, movies were there for me to provide comfort, entertainment, understanding, and so much more. They transported me to worlds beyond my imagination, and I became fascinated with filmmaking as a medium. Since high school, I have enjoyed making movie reviews, but finding an audience was a constant struggle. That was until I joined TikTok in 2021, and since then I have been able to join a community that loves talking about and discussing movies as much as I do. My cinematic philosophy is to enjoy what you enjoy. I'm always trying to expand my tastes and to watch as many movies as I can, no matter the genre, time of release, or country of origin.
Outside of watching movies, I enjoy spending time with my wife and my dog. I also love to ski and collect physical media. I graduated college with a degree in Marketing & Communications in 2018.
My favorite movies: Dazed and Confused, The Thing, Heat, Spider-Man, The Empire Strikes Back, Goodfellas, Mulholland Drive, Aftersun, The Batman, The Big Lebowski, Barry Lyndon, The Fellowship of the Ring, In The Mood For Love, Inception, Arrival.
