The Exorcism is a 2024 horror movie that sees actor Anthony Miller slowly become possessed while filming a supernatural horror movie. His daughter, Miller’s co-star, and the priest hired for research are the only ones who can save him. This movie is unfortunately forgettable and lacks any interesting characters or moments.
The Exorcism is created by Joshua John Miller, son of Exorcist star Jason Miller. With the original title (and the name of the movie within this movie) being the Georgetown Project, I was under the impression that this movie would document the behind-the-scenes hauntings that took place while filming The Exorcist. Instead, we got a tired of rehashing off most other possession movies.
The movie feels like it sleepwalks through its plot. An actor is dealing with the grief of his wife’s passing while also dealing with trauma from the church from his past. He has a daughter who doesn’t respect him because of his alcoholic tendencies amongst other things. The movie doesn’t do much of anything with either of these points. The pacing moves so fast and yet I can’t really think of anything important that happened to either of them. It’s just typical possession movie tropes in order to get from point A to point B.
The movie also isn’t that scary. Movies can be scary without the need for excessive jumpscares. This movie did not get the memo. There is maybe one scene that got a little flinch out of me but not enough to get me interested in the plot at all.
The writing is just abysmal for me. Some of the lines are laughable in and out of context. The characters are paper thin and have no development or growth. Motivations are never explained, things happen when they are needed. Any messages the filmmakers wanted to put out to the audience went flat.
FINAL THOUGHTS
The Exorcism was a miss for me. It set out to separate itself from all other possession movies but ended up making a forgettable film. The acting is not the worst I’ve seen, but it doesn’t save bad writing, a blazing pace, and forgettable characters. You can skip this one.
