Ah, another movie starring Gerard Butler as the sole badass savior of people! How similar is it going to be to his other movies? Surprisingly there were some differences. I feel like Butler stars in hit or miss movies. I love him in 300 and Olympus Has Fallen and I was hoping this would be another one of those kinds of movies. I was both wrong and right.
Plane is about a pilot who has to fly a small group of 14 passengers from Singapore to Honolulu. However, disaster strikes and they run into a storm in the South China Sea and end up crash landing on a remote Island in the Philippines. They quickly find out that the island is run by a group of rebels that even the Philippines army doesn’t want to deal with. Now, Gerard Butler’s character, Brodie, and fellow passenger Louis, who is accused of homicide must explore the island and find a way to get leave before it is too late.
The first third of this movie was suspenseful and had my eyes glued to the screen. For me, any type of man made disaster such as the Titanic or Hindenburg interests me and keeps me in suspense. As the movie progressed, it felt rushed. There was too much happening all at once. For being stranded on an unknown island, they seemed to find their way back and forth to the plane and village awfully quick.
You can easily tell the low budget this movie had, I mean just look at the name of the movie. They honestly couldn’t come up with a better name? And spoiler alert they didn’t even spend that much time inside the actual plane. The movie definitely felt rushed with the production. I wasn’t too much of a fan of the dialogue in some circumstances and the acting also wasn’t up to par.
Now that I am done bashing this movie, time for the actual good parts. The action was great, the close combat hand to hand was well choreographed as well as the gun fights that occurred. I am always a sucker for Special Forces or groups kicking the absolute crap out of the antagonists. It fired me up wanting more of that type of action throughout more of the film. With its short runtime, I think they could have expanded a little bit more on the relationship between Brodie and Louis or have them go through more sticky situations finding the solution to the plane problem.
Final Thoughts
Plane lacked some elements like bad pacing and poorly named title but made up for it in action. I would recommend this movie if you just wanted to sit back for a quick hour and a half and watch while Gerard Butler once again kicks butt in another one of his solo star films.
