When Overwatch 2 was announced, among the new features and content previewed was an all new PvE game mode. This PvE mode would see players going in solo or with a squad to complete missions against A.I. We saw the first of this PvE mode in the form of Story Missions released back in October. These missions involved aspects of the core PvP game modes like pushing payloads and defending objective points.
Since the initial release of the Story Missions, players have gotten little content in regard to PvE. So far Overwatch has only released the Story Missions, Limited Time Modes during events, and Hero Mastery. Players have yet to see the full story campaign that was discussed at the reveal of Overwatch 2. Unfortunately, according to a Bloomberg article, players will not be getting the content after all.
What Happened?
Policy changes within Blizzard ultimately caused this cancellation. Bonuses are given to employees within Activision for performance as a company. Now bonuses are rewarded to employees for performance in individual games. The Overwatch 2 team had failed to meet requirements for these bonuses.
Back when the Story Missions were launched players had to purchase them for $15. This resulted in poor sales numbers and that means a lot for a free to play game. This led to layoffs in the Overwatch 2 PvE team. The main focus originally in Overwatch 2 was to introduce these PvE game modes to add more variety to the competitive shooter. The plan has since changed and the team has put more resources into the PvP side.
This shift in focus for the game could be seen as a good sign. Developers will be able to put more resources and time into the PvP modes. Bugs and issues will be able to be fixed faster and player wants can be fulfilled.
