Season 2 of Disney+ and Marvel’s hit TV show Loki is back, premiering last night at 9pm EDT. There was plenty of hype going into the premier of this season, with many wondering about the aftermath of Loki and Sylvie’s encounter with He Who Remains at the End of Time.
Luckily, season 2 picks up right where season 1’s cliffhanger left off.
Recap
Season 2 kicks off with Loki (Tom Hiddleston) being chased by Mobius (Owen Wilson) and a team of TVA guards as they try and arrest him for being a variant, something we saw a bunch of in Season 1. Only this time, He Who Remains clearly still runs the place, with statues and wall art a plenty seen scattered across the TVA headquarters.
Suddenly, Loki is teleported from this version of the TVA back to the version he knows. He reunites with Mobius and Hunter B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku). The only issue here is that now, Loki is uncontrollably teleporting through time.
Meanwhile, the TVA judicial board is frantically trying to deal with the fact that now there are dozens of branching timelines that are causing massive issues across the TVA.
Loki and Mobius visit Ouroboros (Ke Huy Quan), otherwise known as OB, to try and fix Loki’s issues with teleportation. OB, who is basically the intergalactic mechanic for the TVA, attempts to guide them in fixing their issues while handling the widespread timeline chaos.
Review
I was actually pretty impressed with how this first episode kicked off. It seems, in today’s age of limited episode series, that it’s often the case that the first episode kicks off slowly. Methodically introducing the plot to become centerstage. Not with Loki, however.
Loki Season 2 kicks off in high gear and doesn’t let off the petal for its entire episode runtime. I was pretty impressed with the willingness to introduce and resolve plot points right in episode one. That takes guts, and they went for it.
It also helps that the plot of the second season actually seems quite interesting. There are definite stakes involved for this season and I’m intrigued by how it will play out.
I also have to commend the performances in the first episode. Newcomer Ke Huy Quan adds so much fun and likability to the new character OB. He continues to prove his range as an actor in his tremendous comeback story.
In addition, Hiddleston and Wilson once again prove their fantastic chemistry and convey a sense of urgency and desperation in their performances well.
