Bottoms (2023) Review: Perfectly Fun Chaos

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the movie being covered here wouldn’t exist.

Bottoms is a fun comedy starring Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri as two queer high schoolers who start a “fight club” as a way to hook up with their crushes. This movie is as funny and raunchy as you’d expect, and it was so much fun to watch.

Starting with the leads, Sennott and Edebiri are phenomenal. They’re super awkward but also so incredibly hilarious. The movie was written by director Emma Seligman as well as Sennott and they absolutely nailed the humor. Not that that should have been a surprise, but it was so well-written.

The movie perfectly satirizes high school, completely idolizing the football team to the point that “star player” Nicholas Galitzine’s naked body was on posters for the homecoming game.

The ensemble cast of Bottoms is also great. Marshawn Lynch is so funny in his limited role. It’s fun to see that he improvised most of his lines as he is a really funny dude in real life. It was also nice to see that he took the role because he felt he didn’t handle his sister coming out when he was younger right, and this was his way to make up for it.

Nicholas Galitzine was funny as the jock everyone worships but is an absolute idiot. After seeing him in Red White & Royal Blue, it’s nice to see him play almost the exact opposite character as well as he did.

The group of Ruby Cruz, Havana Rose Liu, and Kaia Gerber were also delights. They were all sexy ass-kickers who shined when they had the opportunity. They showed off their comedic prowess while looking badass beating each other up.

As the title says, this movie was absolute chaos. It’s just nonstop insanity for 90 minutes, plus a really fun blooper reel during the end credits. Bombs are going off, moms are getting railed, and dudes are being released from cages to kick someone’s face in, and that’s not even a fraction of all the hectic, mind-spinning action.

Final Thoughts

There’s so much I want to say about Bottoms, but I truly don’t want to spoil it for you. This is one of the funniest movies I’ve seen this year. The action is fun, the tone is pretty perfect, and the cast is great. Rachel Sennott is going to direct the hell out of her own movie one day and 2023 truly is Ayo Edebiri’s year.

4.5/5

I've always been a movie fan, but I first got big into cinema watching Whiplash when I was younger. That movie led to a greater appreciation of films and got me to dive into the medium. My favorite genre is horror movies, but I’ll always have a secret soft spot for rom coms and musicals. When I'm not podcasting or watching movies, I love working out and going hiking, and I currently work in business analytics with the degree I got from Western New England University.

MY FAVORITE MOVIES: Good Will Hunting, Spiderman: Into The Spiderverse, Whiplash, Moneyball, Top Gun: Maverick
