Best Places to Purchase New Physical Media Releases Online

With the rise of streaming services, we have begun to see a decline in stores carrying new physical media releases. Places like Best Buy used to be the ideal spot to pick up new releases because they often had special editions. Now we have just a few places left that still sell new physical media. I have compiled a list of the best places to pick up your favorite new releases.

In my opinion, Walmart is currently the best option for picking up new physical media releases. Besides standard DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD releases, they also have a selection of special edition steel books. They also carry a large selection of complete box set TV series. This is a game changer because it allows us to become less reliant on streaming platforms. Their prices also tend to be slightly more affordable than their competitors. New releases drop every Tuesday, but sometimes if you’re lucky they put things out a day early.

Barnes and Noble is great place to pick up new physical media releases. They are more unique in that they carry both standard new releases and a selection of boutique physical media. Their prices do tend to be higher than their competitors, but there are ways to save money. They offer a free rewards program and often have sales. Their most notorious sale is the bi-annual Criterion Collection sale. During these two-week periods, all Criterions are 50% off. It is definitely worth taking advantage of if you are looking to upgrade a favorite film or discover something new. If you frequent your local Barnes and Noble, I personally recommend signing up for their paid membership. You gain access to 10% off each item, free shipping, and other member exclusive deals.

Amazon is another place to pick up new releases. They often have special edition steel books and the prices are relatively affordable. I would give a word of warning to be warry of pre-orders. They tend to be unreliable in my and many other’s experience. Another thing to note is that Amazon does tend to push their digital releases so you may have to filter your search to find what you are looking for.

I wanted to end this by reiterating the importance of continuing to support physical media in all realms. In an age where everything is becoming digital, it is critical that we continue preserve media physically. It is so easy for things to be shuffled around and deleted off of streaming platforms. Even if you purchase media digitally, there is no guarantee that you won’t lose access to it. The only way we can ensure that the media we love will still be around for future generations is preserving it physically.

Over the years, movies have given me room to express myself and have helped me to find community. Currently I find myself watching primarily horror/thrillers (David Cronenberg and David Lynch have my heart) but I also love Studio Ghibli and have a special place in my heart for Star Wars and the MCU. When I’m not watching movies, I’m either thrifting physical media, adding to my Scarlet Witch collection or working my retail job.

My Favorite Movies: The Mummy (1999), Clue, Howl’s Moving Castle, IT (1990), and Mamma Mia
