2023 Academy Awards Predictions: Nominees & Winners

The nominees for the 2023 Academy Awards release on Tuesday, January 24th, 2023. With the heralded awards ceremony quickly approaching, we took the time to predict not only who we think will get nominated in some of the major categories, but also who will be lucky enough to earn one of the coveted Oscars.

**NOTE: THIS ARTICLE WILL BE UPDATED ONCE OFFICIAL NOMINEES ARE RELEASED**

BEST PICTURE
  • The Banshees of Inisherin (Searchlight Pictures)
  • Everything, Everywhere, All At Once (A24)
  • The Fabelmans (Universal Pictures)
  • Top Gun: Maverick (Paramount Pictures)
  • Aftersun (A24)
  • All Quiet on the Western Front (Netflix)
  • Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story (Netflix)
  • Living (Sony Pictures)

*ACTUAL NOMINEES*

  • Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • Top Gun: Maverick
  • Elvis
  • Tár
  • The Banshees of Inisherin
  • The Fabelmans
  • Avatar: The Way of Water
  • All Quiet on the Western Front
  • Triangle of Sadness
  • Women Talking

WOW 10 nominees this year. I nailed all the top options, however I still believe Glass Onion was snubbed. Avatar: The Way of Water was a huge oversight on my part. Triangle of Sadness was our under-the-radar pick as I expected, along with Women Talking, which seemed like a perfect Oscar-Bait film when it was released. Still wish Tár and Elvis weren’t included but hey what do I know.

There is always at least one nominee for Best Picture that flew wildly under the radar, and this year I think we will see two: Aftersun and Living. I still believe that Everything, Everywhere, All At Once will win, although some may push for The Banshees of Inisherin, this seems like a race between these two films. NOTABLE OMISSIONS: Tár, Elvis, The Whale

Best Director
  • Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans)
  • Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (Everything Everywhere All at Once)
  • Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin)
  • Damien Chazelle (Babylon)
  • Rian Johnson (Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story)

*ACTUAL NOMINEES*

  • Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans)
  • Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (Everything Everywhere All at Once)
  • Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin)
  • Ruben Ostlund (Triangle of Sadness)
  • Todd Field (Tár)

I was definitely off here. I had the first 3, but was not expecting Ostlund and personally I didn’t like Tár, so I did not include it.

In another extremely close race, I believe the Academy gives the win to Spielberg. The Fabelmans works too well to not give it to him, and the time is right for another Spielberg win. I included Rian Johnson here because of how well Glass Onion is directed and how well Johnson interweaves the mystery throughout the story through clues and misdirection. NOTABLE OMISSIONS: James Cameron, Todd Field, Edward Berger

Best Actor
  • Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin)
  • Bill Nighy (Living)
  • Brendan Fraser (The Whale)
  • Austin Butler (Elvis)
  • Gabriel Labelle (The Fabelmans)/Adam Sandler (The Hustle)

*ACTUAL NOMINEES*

  • Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin)
  • Bill Nighy (Living)
  • Brendan Fraser (The Whale)
  • Austin Butler (Elvis)
  • Paul Mescal (Aftersun)

I’m sad Sandler didn’t get a nomination, but as I predicted, Paul Mescal deserves it here. Otherwise I think the whole planet knew the other 4.

What many anticipated to be a two-horse race between Fraser and Farrell at this year’s Academy Awards suddenly turned to three when Austin Butler unexpectedly won for Best Actor at the Golden Globes. I still fully believe in Fraser to win, and after his Critics Choice Awards win last week, I expect another one here. I could have included Jeremy Pope for The Inspection or Paul Mescal for Aftersun, but I felt that the final nominee spot should go to one of Labelle or Sandler. NOTABLE OMISSIONS: Jeremy Pope, Paul Mescal, Ralph Fiennes

Best Actress
  • Jennifer Lawrence (Causeway)
  • Cate Blanchett (Tár)
  • Michelle Yeoh (Everything, Everywhere, All At Once)
  • Michelle Williams (The Fabelmans)
  • Ana De Armas (Blonde)

*ACTUAL NOMINEES*

  • Andrea Riseborough (To Leslie)
  • Cate Blanchett (Tár)
  • Michelle Yeoh (Everything, Everywhere, All At Once)
  • Michelle Williams (The Fabelmans)
  • Ana De Armas (Blonde)

Sniped Ana De Armas, was completely not expecting Andrea Riseborough. I was hoping Jennifer Lawrence would get the recognition she deserves, but alas not this year.

Almost all of the nominees I am predicting are more than deserving, with the exception of Ana De Armas. Her performance is solid enough to warrant a nomination, but Blonde was so incredibly bad that I don’t think she should get it. That said, the Academy has a tendency to favor Biopics, so she should get one. That said, this is Cate Blanchett’s award to lose, and I would be stunned if she did not win. NOTABLE OMISSIONS: Viola Davis, Anya Taylor-Joy, Margot Robbie

Best Supporting Actor
  • Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin)
  • Barry Keoghan (The Banshees of Inisherin)
  • Paul Dano (The Fabelmans)
  • Ke Huy Quan (Everything, Everywhere, All At Once)
  • Brian Tyree Henry (Causeway)

*ACTUAL NOMINEES*

  • Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin)
  • Barry Keoghan (The Banshees of Inisherin)
  • Judd Hirsch (The Fabelmans)
  • Ke Huy Quan (Everything, Everywhere, All At Once)
  • Brian Tyree Henry (Causeway)

ALMOST NAILED IT. I’m shocked Paul Dano didn’t get a nom, but happy I sniped Brian Tyree Henry for a much deserved nomination.

Ke Huy Quan should win. That’s all that needs to be said. Having swept both the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards, he is by far the front runner. That said, every single nominee here is so deserving I wouldn’t be too upset if there was a different winner. NOTABLE OMISSIONS: Eddie Redmayne, Brad Pitt

Best Supporting Actress
  • Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever)
  • Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin)
  • Hong Chau (The Whale)
  • Stephanie Hsu (Everything, Everywhere, All At Once)
  • Janelle Monáe (Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story)

*ACTUAL NOMINEES*

  • Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever)
  • Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin)
  • Hong Chau (The Whale)
  • Stephanie Hsu (Everything, Everywhere, All At Once)
  • Jamie Lee Curtis (Everything, Everywhere, All At Once)

Another one I almost nailed, I’m surprised they gave a nom to both Curtis and Hsu. I know Curtis was getting a lot of buzz but I figured they would only have included one of the two. That said I’m not disappointed.

This category is more open than any of the others at this year’s Academy Awards. Any of these actresses could feasibly win. That said, I think Angela Bassett does take it slightly over Stephanie Hsu, who deserves this nomination more than anything for being snubbed at the Golden Globes. NOTABLE OMISSIONS: Jamie Lee Curtis, Carey Mulligan

I have been watching movies my whole life and fell in love at an early age. I was entranced by the ability for a film to whisk me away to a different universe, and that really started with the Star Wars Franchise. I'm by no means an expert and can roll with opinions that might be controversial, but that's the beauty of a film; we can all see the same thing on screen, but each of us may come away with a different interpretation of what we saw. When I'm not watching movies, I work in Marketing with my degree from Western New England University.
